What is the Proper Hip Turn in the Golf Swing?
I hear from so many students that they heard or read “you need to start your down swing with the hips.” Well Sergio says he starts his by pulling down on a chain! Bottom line is it depends on the golfer and what he or she feels. You need to get the golf club back to square at impact and have to “balance” your motion so that all the parts of your swing, (body-arms-hands) get to the right place at impact at the right time. Make sense?
Yes there is a slight surge with the lower body at the beginning of the down swing but don’t over emphasize it!!!! Why? Because the center of gravity of your golf swing is the base of the spine and your golf swing in the purest sense should rotate around it.
I believe one of the best ways to see if your body is sliding rather than turning the hips is to take a video of the back of your golf swing. Here’s a perfect example below.
