What’s the Right Down Swing Sequence?

Once You Start Your Downswing Wrong, You’re Toast!

Golfers work on so many different aspects of their golf swing in swing plane, grip, hip turn, while ignoring the fact that if you start your downswing in the wrong “sequence”, all the other work you’ve done is lost.

So many golfers are under the impression that the first move on the down swing is a transfer of weight or shifting to the front foot.  Not true.  I attended a clinic Chi Chi Rodriguez was giving and a person from the audience asked, “Chi Chi, when do you transfer your weight on the downswing?”  Chi Chi said, “there is no transfer of weight on the downswing,” and the crowd made an ooohhh sound like on a missed putt at a tournament.

I was so relieved to hear it from someone else.  Chi chi said he turns on the downswing, not shift.  You might say that Chi Chi is an old timer like me and things have changed with the new long hitting youngsters of today’s tour.  Well here’s a link to a video on Justin Thomas showing he has 93% of his pressure on his back foot at impact!  Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXMLjljbWMo

The only thing that has changed is the golf clubs, the balls and the younger players of today are much better athletes than in earlier years.  Bigger, stronger and faster club head speeds, period.

If you get the sequence of the downswing in proper order, than you can produce the maximum amount of golf club head speed for your capability.  On tee shots, having a longer and lighter driver will help.  After you max out on equipment fitting, you have to head for the gym for more club head speed.

For most senior golfers I suggest faster forearms.  A lighter grip and a good rotating of the forearms through impact.  A word of caution, starting with a weight shift to the front foot FIRST on the downswing will prohibit the forearms from rotating properly, add loft to the golf and consequentially cost you distance.

The feeling I get on the downswing, (remember as they say on tour “what you feel may bot be real”) is that I am pulling the butt of the golf club straight down to the ground not at the ball and the left cheek of my fanny is headed for my back foot.

Check out this video which explains exactly what I’m talking about….

How the Hips Turn in the Down Swing

You Turn Not Slide in the Golf Swing!

Many a golf swing has been ruined with an over emphasis of the transfer of weight forward on the down swing.  It’s not a slide or thrust to the front foot, it’s a turn or clearing motion of the hips with the sensation being the left cheek of your fanny is heading toward your right heel.  (I explain further in the video below).

I went to see Chi Chi Rodriguez do a golf clinic because Paul Haun Jr., (famous trick shot artist that helped me improve my show) said to go see Chi Chi if you get a chance.  If nothing else you’ll steal some great jokes, and I did!

Not expecting it, I took away something even better than the great joke.  A golfer from the gallery asked, “Well Chi Chi, when do you transfer your weight on the down swing?”  To my surprise Chi Chi said, “there is no transfer of weight on the down swing.”  The crowd let out one of those OOHHHHH like a missed putt.  That shows how much misinformation is out there that has been ingrained in the minds of so many golfers.  Here’s another one, “keep your head down!”

Chic Chi went on to say that the golf swing is a rotary motion around a single axis which is the base of the spine. Chi Chi was right on target and take it for Gospel. Why?  Because it’s not often a Cuban agrees with a Porto Rican!  Cubans make better Rum too!

Yes there is a transfer of weight or balance by virtue of the upper body tilt, not the lower body shifting.  In fact, with the proper turn on the back swing, you will feel as if you’re loaded on your left heel but a scale will make a liar out of us because your weight will be on your back foot.  Just like a baseball player throwing a ball from center field to home plate, he tilts back not slide back to throw the ball.

Here’s a video that explains this further.  If you’re not sure where your weight is shifting send us a video of your golf swing for a FREE analysis.  For instructions go to https://quickfixgolf.com/golf-lessons/online-golf-lesson-free/

What is the Proper Hip Turn in the Golf Swing?

What is the Proper Hip Turn in the Golf Swing?

I hear from so many students that they heard or read “you need to start your down swing with the hips.”  Well Sergio says he starts his by pulling down on a chain!  Bottom line is it depends on the golfer and what he or she feels.  You need to get the golf club back to square at impact and have to “balance” your motion so that all the parts of your swing, (body-arms-hands) get to the right place at impact at the right time.  Make sense?

Yes there is a slight surge with the lower body at the beginning of the down swing but don’t over emphasize it!!!!  Why?  Because the center of gravity of your golf swing is the base of the spine and your golf swing in the purest sense should rotate around it.

I believe one of the best ways to see if your body is sliding rather than turning the hips is to take a video of the back of your golf swing.  Here’s a perfect example below.  Below that video is a video analysis of a really good golfer sliding their hips which caused inconsistency.  We include in the video what we need to do to fix it – Quick!
