Golf Clubs Like Bryson DeChambeau Part IV

Single length golf clubs for the irons only!

We’re getting closer and I know you might be impatient by now but we want to get right, not fast.  I take it very seriously when I recommend something to others.  Unlike golf pros that will endorse anything for a buck, I refuse to promote something I wouldn’t use for my self.

We’re real close on what is the 5 iron through the AW.  We have the five iron flying higher than our earlier version.  I’ve tried so many different address positions, swinging more upright and then back to my old set-up that I’ve lost count.  I can say one thing.  I think the one ball position is a plus and it does make it more likely that one would take the same position more often if there were only one to learn or perform.

The problem with the hybrid so far is I think it has to be longer than the irons.  Bryson makes his 3 iron longer than the rest of his irons so it just makes sense that you need some length to help with the lower lofted golf club.  For instance, his irons are 37.5 inches long, (about seven iron length) but his three iron is 39″ long.

The first hybrid we made, (keep in mind this hybrid weighs like a seven iron 242 grams) with a steel shaft just like the rest of the iron set.  Poo poo terrible!  Muy malo!   So I built a hybrid with the graphite shaft same length.  Nada!  Just as bad.  Then I built the hybrid with a graphite shaft and made it 39.5 inches so I could choke up some and try different lengths.  I also made the shaft a bit softer, more flexible.  Walla!  What a difference!  Ball jumped up in the air and I was pretty satisfied.

Don’t get out the Champagne yet!  One BIG problem.  In order for the hybrid to be a full 272 grams they had to make the head bigger.  More mass.  The typical hybrid four head weight is about 249 grams.  The bigger head needed in order to get 272 grams makes the club head to big to cut through the grass like I would want.  That’s probably why Bryson doesn’t have one?  No reason why we can’t go with a standard hybrid weight and just under standard length.

While Bryson’s three iron is 39 inches long his fairway wood is 44 inches.  So there is somewhat of a contradiction here.  Shorter irons, woods and long irons standard?

Nest step is I have a complete other set of heads coming in with all graphite shafts.  Lets see how the graphite shafts do along with the possibility of steel shafts in the 7,8,9,PW,AW and then graphite in the 5 and 6 irons.  Being I will be at the PGA show this week it might be until the end of the month until I can put them together for testing.

How the Hips Turn in the Down Swing

You Turn Not Slide in the Golf Swing!

Many a golf swing has been ruined with an over emphasis of the transfer of weight forward on the down swing.  It’s not a slide or thrust to the front foot, it’s a turn or clearing motion of the hips with the sensation being the left cheek of your fanny is heading toward your right heel.  (I explain further in the video below).

I went to see Chi Chi Rodriguez do a golf clinic because Paul Haun Jr., (famous trick shot artist that helped me improve my show) said to go see Chi Chi if you get a chance.  If nothing else you’ll steal some great jokes, and I did!

Not expecting it, I took away something even better than the great joke.  A golfer from the gallery asked, “Well Chi Chi, when do you transfer your weight on the down swing?”  To my surprise Chi Chi said, “there is no transfer of weight on the down swing.”  The crowd let out one of those OOHHHHH like a missed putt.  That shows how much misinformation is out there that has been ingrained in the minds of so many golfers.  Here’s another one, “keep your head down!”

Chic Chi went on to say that the golf swing is a rotary motion around a single axis which is the base of the spine. Chi Chi was right on target and take it for Gospel. Why?  Because it’s not often a Cuban agrees with a Porto Rican!  Cubans make better Rum too!

Yes there is a transfer of weight or balance by virtue of the upper body tilt, not the lower body shifting.  In fact, with the proper turn on the back swing, you will feel as if you’re loaded on your left heel but a scale will make a liar out of us because your weight will be on your back foot.  Just like a baseball player throwing a ball from center field to home plate, he tilts back not slide back to throw the ball.

Here’s a video that explains this further.  If you’re not sure where your weight is shifting send us a video of your golf swing for a FREE analysis.  For instructions go to https://quickfixgolf.com/golf-lessons/online-golf-lesson-free/

Improve Your Golf Game Over the Winter

Now is the time to make changes in your golf swing

You should have in place an off-season program for making upgrades to your golf swing and/or game in general.  We’re located in Virginia and the winters really aren’t that severe but if you’re further north you better clean out the garage and get a mat and net.

I would also suggest a mirror and if possible download the V1 home version of their software so you can do an analysis based on the one I did for you originally.  The more you learn to help yourself the better.  I always say, the educated golfer is our best member!

You actually only have two months, (January/February) which is why you should have started back in November.  Players from the Champions Tour rent a house next to the golf course of their choice in Florida for the most part to practice the entire month of December, (taking a short break on Christmas to get back with the family) preparing for the first tournament in January usually in Hawaii.

Nicklaus used to go back to his pro Jack Grout every year and say lets start with the grip.  Even a simple fundamental can make all the difference in your play.

Here’s some tips on making your re-build program successful.

  1. Get professional help in pinpointing the exact movement you wish to re-program or train.
  2. Do drills that focus right on the swing fault you’re re-programing.
  3. Do the drills slowly in front of a mirror and make sure your instructor sees you performing the drills to make sure you’re taking the swing medication properly.
  4. Be patient and don’t rush it all out to the golf course expecting stellar results.  You should film yourself hitting balls on the range vs the movement you are performing in our garage.  You may be very surprised at the difference.

Tiger mentioned that it took him 13 months to implement the changes Butch Harmon was recommending for his game.  Tigers also said, you have to dominate the movement in a drill, carry it over to the range, take it to the golf course, then to a tournament and then a major.  He also said it can all break down all along the way.

Golf is NOT an easy game!  BUT that’s part of the beauty of it all.  You must accept significant failure with a few short moments of shear bliss when for some reason we may never know, you play the round of your life.  Look at Jim Furyk.  Looking at all the golf swings on tour, would you have chosen Jim Furyk to shoot the record 58?

Here’s a our webinar held on January 5th 2017 entitled How To Do an Off Season Rebuild of Your Golf Swing.  If you have never seen your swing on video just get out your cell phone and video your swing and email it to ;”>bobbylopez@quickfixgolf.com for a FREE analysis.
